Agasthyam Sampradayam: A New Direction in Kalaripayattu Teacher Training

A new direction in teaching Kalaripayattu

In 2018, Gurukkal S. Mahesh began a new chapter in how Kalaripayattu is passed on. He designed a structured Kalaripayattu teacher training course built on systematic learning, quality training, and the responsibility of carrying the tradition to the next generation.

For generations, Kalaripayattu was transmitted through the Gurukulam system; directly from Guru to student. Gurukkal S. Mahesh saw the need to strengthen this living tradition with a structured, academic pathway, without losing its traditional foundation.

That vision became Agasthyam Sampradayam.

It was not created simply to produce more trainers. It was created to develop better practitioners, responsible teachers, and a generation able to carry Kalaripayattu forward with depth and quality.

What the Kalaripayattu TTC covers

The programme brings together:

  • Traditional Kalaripayattu knowledge and Gurukulam learning
  • Systematic physical conditioning and progressive training
  • Teaching methodology and class management
  • Discipline, ethics and lineage values

This Kalaripayattu TTC is a one-year, 600+ hour pathway, combining intensive residential Kalaripayattu training with online training, in Kerala with guided training and an internship.

Behind it are years of practice, teaching and observation by a fifth-generation Kalaripayattu Gurukkal and one guiding question:

How can a living martial tradition be passed on with the depth of the Guru Parampara and the quality the next generation needs?

That question shaped Sampradayam.

More than Kalari teacher training

What happens when you go beyond learning how to run a class?

You begin to understand the body: movement, discipline, conditioning, flexibility, recovery and progression. You learn how a Guru develops a student. You learn to structure a class, correct movement, manage students, and take responsibility for the learning environment.

Then you enter the world of traditional weapons, progressing towards advanced practice and ultimately the Urumi. Deeper in the journey, you explore Marma and traditional healing.

This is why Sampradayam is more than Kalari teacher training. It is a deeper education in Kalaripayattu.

The goal is not just a certificate. It is knowledge, practice, discipline, and a foundation to build your own path.

Become a Kalaripayattu teacher and beyond

Your journey does not have to end with becoming a trainer. After the course, you can:

  • Become a Kalaripayattu teacher trained in the Agasthyam lineage
  • Open your own Kalaripayattu studio or training centre, with mentorship and support from Agasthyam
  • Build a professional path teaching in schools, institutions, wellness spaces or dedicated centres
  • Go deeper into advanced weapons, or into Marma and healing
  • Combine Kalaripayattu with yoga, fitness, movement, dance or wellness
  • Or simply go deeper as a serious practitioner

For yoga teachers

If you already teach yoga, Kalaripayattu opens another dimension of your practice. Bring martial movement, strength, agility, awareness and discipline into your classes. Take your yoga beyond the mat, and explore Warrior Yoga, movement and traditional wellness.

The Agasthyam approach connects Kalaripayattu with physical development, breath, inner awareness, Marma and holistic wellbeing.

The qualification opens a door. What you build with the knowledge is your journey.

Three levels. One deeper journey.

Level 1: Foundation & Teacher Training

Build the practitioner. Prepare the teacher.

The first stage of this Kalaripayattu certification course builds the foundations: Meipayattu, Chuvadu, Vadivu, body conditioning, flexibility, movement, basic bare-hand techniques, locks and foundational weapon practice.

But technique is only part of it. You also learn Kalari Sampradayam, teaching methodology, class management, discipline, ethics, lineage values and the responsibility of teaching.

Before you teach the tradition, you must experience it deeply.

Level 2: Weapons and Urumi training

Go beyond the basics. Enter the world of traditional weapons.

The journey moves into the traditional weapon systems:

  • Short staff
  • Sword
  • Knife
  • Sword and shield
  • Advanced weapon sequences
  • And ultimately, the Urumi

Urumi demands exceptional control, coordination, timing, spatial awareness and discipline. It asks the practitioner to understand movement at a much deeper level.

First control the body. Then understand the weapon. Then master the movement.

Level 3: Healing and Marma training

The warrior must understand the body, not only to fight, but to protect and restore it.

Kalaripayattu has a profound relationship with traditional body knowledge and healing. This stage goes deeper into Marma, vital points, traditional body understanding, advanced locks and Kalari healing practices.

At Agasthyam, the martial and healing dimensions are two connected parts of the larger Kalari tradition. The journey moves from strength to understanding, from combat to healing, from external practice to deeper knowledge of the human body.

Learn. Practise. Experience. Transmit.

Sampradayam is built on four dimensions:

  1. Learn the knowledge.
  2. Practise the techniques.
  3. Experience the discipline.
  4. Transmit the tradition responsibly.

Knowing a technique is different from understanding it. Understanding it is different from being able to teach it.

A true teacher must know how to observe a student, spot weaknesses, correct movement, build progression and create the right environment for learning. That is why quality training sits at the heart of Sampradayam.

From student to teacher. From teacher to tradition bearer.

The deeper purpose is not simply another generation of instructors. It is people who understand the responsibility of carrying knowledge forward.

Some will become full-time Kalaripayattu teachers. Some will open their own Kalari. Some will take Kalaripayattu into yoga, fitness, education, wellness or movement. Some will continue into weapons and advanced practice. Some will enter the healing dimension.

The paths differ. The foundation stays the same: deep learning, quality practice, responsible teaching.

According to Agasthyam, more than 100 trainers have been professionally placed after completing its teacher training programme, teaching at institutions and independent Kalari centres.

A stronger pathway for the tradition

When Gurukkal S. Mahesh began developing the course in 2018, the intention was never to separate Kalaripayattu from its tradition. It was to build a stronger pathway for passing it on.

Tradition needs practitioners. Practitioners need teachers. Teachers need depth. And a living tradition needs people able to carry it forward.

From the traditional Gurukulam to systematic training. From student to practitioner. From practitioner to teacher. From teacher to someone who creates new spaces for Kalaripayattu.

This is more than becoming a trainer. It is learning deeply enough to become part of the tradition’s continuing journey.

Agasthyam Sampradayam

Learn deeply. Train systematically. Teach responsibly. Carry the tradition forward.
