What comes after Yoga?

You’ve learned to breathe. To move. To be still. To look within. But are you prepared for life beyond the mat?
WARRIOR YOGA – The stillness of Yoga. The power of the Warrior. The strength to face life.

Designed and guided by Gurukkal S. Mahesh – The Warrior Monk. 5th Generation Kalarippayattu Gurukkal · Master of Kalarippayattu, Yoga, Meditation and the Siddhar Tradition · Founder, Agasthyam Foundation.

Strength Outside. Stillness Inside.

For centuries, India’s warrior tradition shaped more than fighters. It built resilient bodies, disciplined minds, steady breath, and deep inner awareness.

Yoga developed the inner dimension. The warrior tradition developed the dynamic one. Different paths, one pursuit: mastery of the self.

Warrior Yoga brings both together – a practice inspired by Kalarippayattu that unites movement, breath, meditation and conscious living. More than exercise, it’s a journey: from strength to stillness, and back out into life.

Millions practise asana. Millions sit in meditation. But every practitioner eventually steps off the mat and that’s where life actually happens. Can your practice meet you there?

That question is where Warrior Yoga begins.

From the Battlefield to the Breath

Kalarippayattu is often called among the world’s oldest living martial arts, like most traditions this old, its exact origins were never written down; they were passed on.

Long before it lived in studios, Kalarippayattu trained the warriors of Kerala’s battlefields. Inside the Kalari, a student didn’t just learn to fight, he learned to move, breathe, fall, rise, and master the mind. The Guru was never simply a coach. The Guru was a keeper of knowledge, passed body to body, generation to generation.

Weapons training was never separate from healing. Through Marma: the traditional science of the body’s vital points, practitioners learned exactly where the body breaks, and exactly how to mend it.

When colonial rule and modern warfare pushed public practice into decline, the art survived the way old traditions survive: quietly, inside a handful of families and Gurus who refused to let it die.

Through the twentieth century it found its way back to the stage, to cinema, to the world’s imagination. A choreographed fight scene can spark interest. It cannot replace years of disciplined practice under a Kalari Gurukkal.

Today, that same lineage trains students, practitioners and seekers from across the world, in Kerala and beyond.

The Missing Dimension

Yoga takes you within. The warrior prepares you for life.

For nearly three decades, Gurukkal Mahesh has lived inside both traditions at once. Yoga taught him silence. Kalari taught him readiness. Over time, he saw they were never separate journeys, two dimensions of the same preparation.

Modern life asks for both. Not stillness alone. Not strength alone. The clarity to stay calm, and the discipline to act when it matters.

Warrior Yoga isn’t a replacement for yoga. It’s the dimension yoga left out, not just how to meet yourself on the mat, but how to meet the world: with discipline, compassion and strength.

“A true warrior is not one who conquers others, but one who has mastered himself.”
– Gurukkal S. Mahesh

The Journey: From the Kalari to the World
Wherever you begin, you become part of a lineage that spans generations and now spans the globe.

From the Gurukkal: "What Comes Next?"

I have spent my life between two worlds, the world of Yoga, and the world of the Warrior.

Yoga taught me to look within. Kalari taught me to face the world. Over time, I understood these were never separate journeys. They were two dimensions of preparation: one builds inner awareness, the other builds dynamic readiness.

So I began asking,  what happens when we bring them together? That question became Warrior Yoga.

I don’t see it as another yoga programme. I see it as another possibility for the practitioner: to become stronger without losing stillness, more dynamic without losing awareness, more resilient without losing compassion.

Because eventually, every practitioner steps off the mat. And that’s where life begins.

– Gurukkal S. Mahesh

Rooted in Kalarippayattu

The traditional Kalari was never only a place to learn combat. It was a school for preparing the whole human being.

The body was trained. Movement refined. Breath understood. Concentration developed. Discipline cultivated. Awareness deepened.

Warrior Yoga draws from this deeper dimension of the Kalari tradition and brings it into a contemporary yogic practice.

Ancient roots. Living practice. Modern life.

The Warrior Monk - Gurukkal S. Mahesh

A rare teacher devoted to both the warrior and yogic traditions. For over three decades, Gurukkal Mahesh has taught Kalarippayattu, Yoga, Meditation, Marma and Siddhar wisdom to thousands, students, military personnel, athletes and seekers from around the world.

FAQ's

Beginner Kalaripayattu - Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that beginning your journey may bring many questions. Here you’ll find clear and helpful answers to some of the most common queries, making it easier to get started with confidence.

What is Warrior Yoga?

A practice designed and guided by Gurukkal S. Mahesh, bringing together the inner discipline of Yoga with the dynamic intelligence of Kalarippayattu, one of the world’s oldest martial art traditions. It develops strength, movement, stability, lightness, breath, concentration, inner power and freedom. Its purpose: take the wisdom of yoga beyond the mat, and prepare you for life.

Gurukkal S. Mahesh, a fifth-generation Kalarippayattu Gurukkal, martial arts and yoga master, and tradition bearer. Warrior Yoga is the outcome of his lifelong training, practice and teaching: yoga’s wisdom and the warrior tradition, brought into one contemporary path.
Both, and neither exactly. Yoga develops inner mastery. Kalari develops dynamic mastery. Warrior Yoga brings the two together through movement, breath, awareness, strength and discipline.
Most practices train you for stillness, or for movement – rarely both. Warrior Yoga trains you to stay grounded in stillness while moving with strength and purpose. That’s the meeting point of the yogi and the warrior.
No. It’s built for beginners and experienced practitioners alike, developing progressively to each person’s capacity. You begin where you are.
The Eightfold Warrior Path – strength, movement, stability, lightness, vital energy, concentration, inner power, and freedom. Dimensions of development, not just physical qualities.
No. “Warrior” here means preparedness, discipline and courage, not aggression. Strength without aggression. Power without violence. Courage without arrogance. At its core, Warrior Yoga is a practice of self-mastery.
Because every practitioner eventually steps off the mat, into a life full of pressure, change and uncertainty. The real question isn’t just “can you be still?”. It’s “can you stay centred when life moves around you?” Warrior Yoga trains you to carry yoga’s awareness into action.
