Dhanurvidya - Indian Traditional Archery

Led by: Gurukkal S. Mahesh

The Bow Is Only The Doorway

Dhanurveda means the knowledge of the bow: dhanuḥ, bow; veda, knowledge. It is counted among the Upavedas and is particularly associated with the Yajurvedic tradition.
But the discipline reaches far past archery. How to stand. How to move. How to hold a weapon, how to aim, how to release. How to fight without one. How to read terrain. How to conduct conflict according to principles of righteousness. This is the difference between learning a weapon and learning the science of the warrior.
The 14-Day Indian Traditional Archery Residential Training is an immersive introduction to traditional archery in Kerala, conducted in the traditional Gurukulam environment of Agasthyam Kalari. Training goes beyond learning to shoot a bow. Participants are introduced to stance, movement, breath, concentration, awareness and disciplined practice: a training that sharpens focus and attention, releases stress, and brings the mind and body into alignment. These are genuine archery classes in Kerala, rooted in the Dhanurveda tradition.
The weapon extends the warrior. It does not replace the warrior.

The Story

The 14-Day Indian Traditional Archery Residential Training is an immersive introduction to traditional archery in Kerala, conducted in the traditional Gurukulam environment of Agasthyam Kalari. Training goes beyond learning to shoot a bow. Participants are introduced to stance, movement, breath, concentration, awareness and disciplined practice: a training that sharpens focus and attention, releases stress, and brings the mind and body into alignment. These are genuine archery classes in Kerala, rooted in the Dhanurveda tradition.

Before The Arrow

Imagine a young warrior standing before his teacher. His bow is ready. His body is trained. His eyes are fixed on the target. But before he is allowed to release the arrow, his teacher asks him a question: “What are you protecting?” The student hesitates. The teacher does not ask about the target. He asks about dharma.

From Dhanurveda To Kalari

Dhanurveda was not simply about shooting arrows. The wider Indian martial tradition included knowledge of weapons, movement, physical conditioning, concentration, strategy and the human body. In Kerala, we have Kalarippayattu. In Tamil traditions, we find Silambam, Adimurai and Varma Kalai. These traditions have their own histories, teachers and regional development, this is the real meaning of martial training.

Four Padas. One Journey

Initiation → Preparation → Mastery → Application
The 14-day programme lays the foundation: the first three padas.
01 · Dikshapadam (Initiation & foundation)
Stance, posture, grip, alignment, aim, draw, release. And the first vow: a relationship with the Guru, and the discipline to hold power responsibly.
02 · Sangraha Padam (Collection & preparation)
Know the weapon: its nature, construction, care and use. A weapon is only as effective as the knowledge behind it.
03 · Siddha Prayoga (Accomplished application)
Draw, shoot, handle, control. Not one movement done right once, but movements that are precise and dependable, through repeated practice.
04 · Prayoga Vidhi (The method of application) · Advanced level
The next stage of the journey. Distance, wind, terrain, timing, direction, circumstance. The same weapon behaves differently in different conditions.

Everything Must Align

The external target may be a mark. The internal target is your own weakness: fear, anger, hesitation, arrogance, lack of discipline. And the stress you carry in with you.
The bow. The arrow. The body. The breath. The mind. And finally, your action, with dharma.
