Some connections in life begin long before memory. My relationship with Sage Agasthya feels like one of them. Not a discovery made through books or pilgrimages, but a realisation that unfolded from the moment I was born.

In our home, the presence of Agasthya was never something distant; it was a living, breathing reality. My father, Sanalji, was my first guru. Every day, he would recite Agasthya’s padals with profound devotion. As a child, I may not have understood every word, but I absorbed the resonance behind them. Those sounds entered my mind quietly, becoming the foundation of my inner world.

Today, those memories serve as a guiding light within the Kalari. Through my father, my spiritual connection with Agasthya deepened naturally, eventually leading to the founding of Agasthyam Kalari. For me, naming our school this way was not just a choice, it was a homecoming to a space rooted in tradition, discipline, and inner awakening.

The Warrior Sage: Redefining Strength

When we commissioned the statue of Sage Agasthya for Agasthyam, I was uncompromising on one aspect: he could not look weak or fragile. For generations, we have been conditioned to imagine sages as physically detached from the world. But that image never resonated with the Agasthya I have known and experienced through Kalaripayattu.

The master of weapons, marmas, medicine, and discipline cannot look defeated by life. We shaped him with a firm stance, grounded feet, a broad chest, and alert eyes – a sage who could meditate like a mountain and move like a storm. When he was installed, it didn’t feel like placing an idol; it felt like a guardian had taken his seat.

To me, Agasthya is not merely mythology. He is the living spirit of Kalaripayattu, the world’s oldest martial art, flowing through our practice, healing traditions, and the relentless human search for balance.

Kalaripayattu: The Art of Absolute Balance

Long before techniques and weapons, there was a deeper understanding that true mastery comes from the union of wisdom and strength. Agasthya embodies this union. Tradition holds that when imbalance disturbed the earth, it was Agasthya who journeyed south to restore harmony.

This is the very essence of Kalari training. Whether you are looking for Kalaripayattu classes for physical fitness or seeking self defense training, the goal remains the same: the balance of breath, body, mind, awareness, and action.

As the world’s oldest martial art, this discipline is a comprehensive system. Kalaripayattu, Siddha medicine, Varma Shastra, and yoga all flow from this timeless current. When I guide students, whether in local Kalaripayattu classes in Trivandrum or through our global online Kalaripayattu training, I emphasise upon three pillars:

  • Strategy before aggression.
  • Clarity before action.
  • Intelligence before force.

The Lineage Continues

Our epics say that even Lord Rama approached Agasthya before the great war. The sage did not merely bless him; he prepared him with weapons, wisdom, and clarity. This is the role of a true Kalari Gurukkal.

As long as the Kalari lives, Agasthya lives. As long as the Silambam staff spins and marmas heal, his wisdom remains accessible. We are not just teaching a sport; we are preserving a sacred spirit for future generations.
