Gurukkal Dr. S. Mahesh is celebrated as an Indian Martial arts Guru, often revered as a “Warrior Monk,” dedicated to the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu . As the fifth-generation master in a 130-year-old lineage, he upholds the rich tradition of Kalaripayattu and Siddha systems. Gurukkal’s approach blends tradition with innovation, making Kalaripayattu accessible to a global audience while preserving its original essence.

Gurukkal offers a unique perspective on Kalaripayattu as a comprehensive system for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. He serves as the Co-Principal investigator of the IKS Center for Kalaripayattu and Siddhar Tradition, under the Ministry of Education, Govt of India.

Honors and Recognitions from Indian Army

In recognition of his outstanding efforts to preserve, modernize, and promote the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu, Dr. S. Mahesh has received numerous prestigious honors. He was awarded the Indian Army’s Medal of Excellence, the South Star Medal by Southern Commander A.K. Singh, and a ceremonial bayonet by Lt. General Anand Narayanan during a distinguished ceremony at the Military Headquarters of War, Indore. His contributions have also been acknowledged by Brigadier Lalith Sharma and Brigadier Salil.

Dr. Mahesh was honored by the Honorable Governor of Kerala, Sri Arif Mohammed Khan, for his relentless dedication to the martial heritage of India. He has also received accolades from the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes, and Narcotics (NACIN) for his efforts in promoting cultural and physical discipline through martial arts.
